Brainport aims to improve the regional ecosystem for established companies and start-ups. UNIIQ is a new proof-of-concept fund, an initiative of InnovationQuarter, Erasmus MC, TU Delft and Leiden University. Together, Joep and Liduina will share their insights about what it means to work in and on an economic ecosystem, the role that startups play and how to help them and the ecosystem grow.
Joep Brouwers has been active as an manager and a consultant in the field of technology and human behaviour since the mid-eighties. First as developer and project manager for new media applications for education, later on as director of a publishing house for magazines on the relation between the developed and the underdeveloped countries. Here he had his first internet experiences as one of the first database publishers in the Netherlands. In 1997 he entered the board of the Dutch branch of ISOC (Internet Society) where he took part in the uprise of the internet industries in the Netherlands and the burst of the internet bubble end 2000. From 2001 till 2007 he worked as a strategic policy advisor for the province of Noord- Brabant of innovation and economic development. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, and went to work at the Mass Tech Collaborative’s Innovation Institute – a public agency focused on growing the innovation economy in Massachusetts. During her time there, Melissa helped launch a number of startup-focused initiatives and public-private partnerships. Following this, she joined the digital media startup Streetwise Media, and led its flagship property as General Manager until the company’s acquisition in 2013. Erik Stam is full professor and head of the Strategy, Organization and Entrepreneurship chair at the Utrecht University School of Economics. He is also academic director of the Utrecht Center for Entrepreneurship.
Together with his colleagues at Utrecht University and globally he provides new insights into how entrepreneurship is affected by its (organizational, economic and societal) context, and how entrepreneurship subsequently affects these contexts.
His research on entrepreneurship and development has been published in leading economics, geography and management journals, and he is consistently ranked among the top 10% authors in the field of Entrepreneurship. He is editor of Small Business Economics. Next to his scientific work he is frequently consulted by regional, national and supra-national policy makers and private sector organizations.

In 2007 Arthur Tolsma co-founded Greetinq BV, where he experienced the ups and downs of the startup life. He held on, and sold the company in 2012.
