Many corporates in the Netherlands are ahead of the game when it comes to spinning out startups. Pioneers like Philips have built successful models of developing innovations in house, and then letting them grow into their own thriving entities.
But there are still struggles, and it can get messy. Salim Ismail, former head of Yahoo’s incubator Brick House and co-author of Exponential Organizations likes innovation inside acorporate to a virus inside of a host - a threat that, to protect itself, the host often tries to squash.
So what’s the secret to spinning out startups successfully? What can we learn from the battle wounds, stresses, and struggles on both the corporate and the startup side? Jorg van Heesbeen is the co-founder of Jedlix, a spin-off from renewable energy utility Eneco, which has developed a platform that connects the charging of electric cars with renewable energy production. In his role Jorg is responsible for partnerships with automotive OEMs, Chargepoint Operators and Utilities. Before founding Jedlix, Jorg worked in the area of renewable energy integration and demand side management for Eneco Energy Trade and Smart Home Developer Quby in both the Netherlands and Silicon Valley. Jorg holds a degree in Energy Innovation Management from a combined program at Utrecht University and Columbia University.

Melissa is the General Manager for CIC Rotterdam. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, and went to work at the Mass Tech Collaborative’s Innovation Institute – a public agency focused on growing the innovation economy in Massachusetts. During her time there, Melissa helped launch a number of startup-focused initiatives and public-private partnerships. Following this, she joined the digital media startup Streetwise Media, and led its flagship property as General Manager until the company’s acquisition in 2013. Prior to becoming General Manager, Melissa helped extensively on CIC’s expansion to the Netherlands and launch in Miami, Florida.
