In this session we discuss ‘Combinatoric Innovation’, the process that is based on combining resources to find new opportunities for value creation. The basic question related to Combinatoric Innovation reads: “What could we do together?” It is an explorative journey, which means that upfront you never know what the outcome will be. Serendipity is key and Brilliant Failures are part of the learning process! In this session we will explore and discuss environments that support the process of Combinatoric Innovation. These environments are composed of four components: Process/Organisation, Cultural/Social, Digital/Virtual, Real/Physical. In these ‘subspaces’ we can identify and implement interventions that support people and organisations to enjoy unexpected encounters with unexpected results. The end-result is an ‘O-zone’ where people and organisations experience positive energy, enabling them to jointly explore new, sustainable value creation.
Paul Iske is professor Open Innovation & Business Venturing at the School of Business and Economics of the University Maastricht. He mainly focuses on service innovation and social innovation, specialising in ‘combinatoric innovation’. In his role as Chief Dialogues Officer at ABN AMRO (until mid 2015), Paul worked on making connections to create innovative and lasting value. Paul is founder of the ‘Institute for Brilliant Failures’ (Instituut voor Briljante Mislukkingen), aiming to enhance understanding and appreciation for the complexity of innovation and entrepreneurship. Paul is co-founder of the International Institute for Serious Optimism, with the ambiton to turn the world into an ‘O-zone’, where people and organisations experience positiev energy, leading to positive impact.
He is also the owner of KnocoM (Knowledge-conscious Management), offering advice and presentations about smart, innovative and sustainable entrepreneurship.
